This is one of the highlights of the local MTB calendar, here’s what SPAM have to say about it…
The 12 hour Salisbury Plain mountain bike event (formerly the Set2Rise) hosted by SPAMBiking is now in its 4th year. The event that takes place on the last May bank holiday weekend has steadily grown in popularity due to the quality of the course (fun singletrack now makes up even more of the 7-mile lap), the great organisation and friendly atmosphere.
This year the format is changing from an overnight race to a Midday to Midnight race on Saturday 28th May. We struggled for a new name; we liked SPAM SPAM (Start Pedalling At Midday, Stop Pedalling At Midnight) but have settled for the more sensible “Erlestoke Twelve”. This new time will give more daylight riding plus the final few hours of night riding and for anyone who’s scared of the dark, or gets knackered after 6 hours, there’s the option to race for 6 hours from Midday til 6pm! The course will be similar to previous years featuring the roller-coaster grintastic singletrack of Erlestoke Woods.
12 hr race:
- Solo – £30
- Pair – £55
- Team (up to 4 riders) – £100
6 hr race:
- Solo – £25
- Pair – £50
- Team (up to 4 riders) – £80
The event is sponsored by Charge Bikes who will be donating a stunning array of prizes again this year. Light hire and charging wil be offered by Lumicycle and Mule Bar will be giving away tasters of their excellent products throughout the race, while keeping the tunes going to raise spirits! Catering will be from Luffy’s Bus, The Drop-Off Cafe or you can bring your own provisions for the post-race celebrations! Bertie Maffoon’s bike shop will provide spares, and any emergency maintenance can be carried out by Finely Tuned Ride. Free camping will be available on Saturday Night for a well deserved rest after racing!
I recognise that photo…. ; )
This is going to be an amazing event, with some top pro riders such as Danny Macaskill and Chris Akrigg racing head to head with some local heroes including our very own Red Bull event specialist Neil Cousins. Come along and support them, but make sure you cheer for the most for Neil, obviously!
To settle a long standing battle between bike disciplines. Who will be the fastest in a short uphill sprint in Bristol’s city centre? A night time dual uphill eliminator race for all bike disciplines: BMX, Mountain Bike, Road Cycling and Fixed Gear. Taking place on the iconic Park Street and featuring 16 of the top bike athletes from across the UK versus 16 top local heroes from Bristol, Red Bull Hill Chasers will settle the score once and for all.

Today was ace, the weather was stunning and the trails were sweet. Orange and Trek did the business bringing a fleet of 2011 bikes for us all to play with whilst Richard cooked up some sausages for everyone to eat. We opened the Dinner ’til Dusk descent especially and it seemed to go down a treat; loamy, flowy and loads of fun.
A great day riding other people’s bikes in our back garden.
Thanks to Live2Ride for arranging it.

“The Guys and Girls at Black Canon Collective [THATS US!] have kindly allowed us to use their trails for the day and have marked out a DH course and XC route for all to use.
All you need to do is bring along proof of identification and a credit card, we are running the event on a first come first serve basis, so the sooner you arrive the more bikes you can ride.
Adam from Orange and Jez from Trek will be on hand to fit the bikes and ask questions, plus we will be serving hot food and drinks to keep you warm.”
What’s a Ceilidh? well first of all you don’t say it like that, it’s “Kay-Lay”…there, that’s it.
Right, well it’s like barn-dancing, just better. It brings everyone together (any age) to have brilliant fun and best of all there are no dancing skill required – just enthusiasm! I’ve managed to get The Little Biggar Band to play / call which is really exciting – they’re amazing musicians from my home-town in Scotland, so it’s a great chance to enjoy authentic, traditional Scottish ceilidh music at its best, complete with jigs and the reels. Oh, and there’s even delicious hot supper included in the ticket-price to provide you with all the energy you could need [only if tickets have been purchased before 12:00 noon, 24/11/2010].
The evening has been organised as an excuse for a party but also to raise some money for the club so that we can get closer to building those lovely single-track trails we all dream of at our allotment in Longleat.
Aside from dancing, wearing tartan and drinking Iron-Bru we’ll also be holding a raffle in aid of Re-cycle; a charity which collects secondhand bicycles and ships them to Africa. Their partners distribute bikes and teach riders the skills to repair and maintain them as affordable transport. The bikes also help health/AIDS workers reach remote villages and even provide an ambulance service in remote Namibia – it’s a wonderful cause.
The venue capacity is between 300-400 and tickets have been selling fast so buy yours now to avoid disappointment and guarantee a plate of supper (just click on the image to be taken to the shop). Oh and the event is open to everyone, so bring your nan!
Many of you will know that the Black Canon Collective were the people who, on the day, made the Cobble Wobble run smoothly (both this year and last). Check out this great video produced by Charge Bikes and Red Bull to showcase the event…
…not bad ey? I’d like to say a massive thank you too all the BCC members who worked so hard over the whole day – the event wouldn’t have happened if it wasn’t for you.
You may remember that we were involved in the Velo Jam last year, an evening of bike centered events held in Frome to celebrate the visiting Tour of Britain cycle race. We ran the Cobble Wobble, a bicycle hill climb sprint in the heart of Frome that saw massive crowds, funny costumes and some very impressive times. It was great fun, and was something that we were very keen to be involved with every year .
Well we are; this year the Cobble Wobble is being held as a stand alone event but this time we’ve been involved from the start!
The event poster below explains everything you need to know for now, click on it and you’ll be taken to the Cobble Wobble website where you can sign up to find out about entries before anyone else. It’s going to be an awesome day with lots of great people, food, bikes, Cobble Wobble ale and some pretty amazing prizes too. The event is being supported by Charge Bikes and Red Bull so expect to see some famous faces and very very fast times.
Neil Cousins, last years winner (and BCC member) is going to have to eat plenty of Helen’s Millionaires Shortcake if he’s going to be in with a shout this year…
Check out the website for frequent updates and KEEP THE 19TH SEPTEMBER FREE!

p.s. we need 16 volunteers to help run the Cobble Wobble on the day. Volunteers will get free entry to the race and after party (which will be pretty special), food and drinks during the event and a goody bag. They will also be helping to raise money for the club by their involvement. Please email andrew.denham@blackcanoncollective.co.uk if you’re interested. thanks!
It’s TickerTape this Sunday.
We’re riding Spoons.
The course has been modified (for this month only) to add a little spice, and mix things up a bit.
The changes add speed (to the fastest trail we’ve got) so lycra and bullet helmets may be an advantage.
I’m joking of course, bullet helmets help no-one. ever.
Timing starts at 11 and will run until 3.
As always, there’s plenty to play for so bring some beans* and your shouting voice too.
Members only, full face helmet and a working bike needed to take part.
Oh and some beans, don’t forget the beans!
*Beans have been proven to be far more effective than Gnar, Shred, Rip and even Gunning It.
