Dinner 'til Dusk (2) – 25th July
Sunday 25th of July will see the second Dinner ’til Dusk event at The Allotment. Utilising much of the same course as the last time (but with an all new, much less brutal, main climb) the event will run from 14:00 until 17:00 with the course open for practice from 13:00.
For those of you who are unfamiliar with the event it is a mini- enduro. Each solo rider or team aims to do as many laps of the course as they can in the three hours with prizes awarded for the riders who have given the most ‘beans’ during the event, whether through determination, enthusiasm or by helping to generate a great atmosphere.
While it is helpful to know in advance who is and isn’t coming (to build the essential culture of teasing and abuse) it is fine to come along on the day with no warning and no teammates!
The event is suitable for anyone: downhillers, social XC riders, stag dos, corporate team building groups, nuns, pirates…….

Two Seconds
On Saturday Mark, Peter, Simon and I (aided by our ‘Pit Boss’ Juliet) took part in the Bristol Bike Fest – a 12 hour enduro. The day was hot, the course fast and our minds full of the expectation and pressure of Simon’s podium dream.
At 9am as Pete set off on our first lap it started a two hour loop of ride, lie down, drink, eat, toilet that repeated it’s self throughout the day.
At 20:35 the pattern changed. We’d all done six laps. We were all tired. Mark’s bike was broken. The realities of 11 hours of pounding the track caught up with us, 24 laps was to be our total. But then a hero came along.
Simon charged off, knowing he had to improve his fastest lap time by over 90 seconds to get back in time for his lap to count to our total. “Fly Big Bird, Fly!” we screamed. Onwards he battled, air escaping from his tyres as he slammed his bike into the dusty corners. Meanwhile back at the finish the crowd gathered, all wondering whether he would make it back.
With 90 seconds left we thought he’d failed
With 60 seconds to go he charged into sight, stamping on the pedals.
With 20 seconds left he rounded the corner into sight of the finish.
With the crowd roaring him on, Simon crossed the line two seconds after the end of the race.
Despite being stuck on 24 laps we all still felt elated by the beans that we’d all put in and how close Simon had come to sneaking the 25th lap with his storming run.
We’ll be back in 2011. -
Dinner 'til Dusk: The Results Show
Sunday 25th of April 2010 saw the first of what we hope to be a regular event – Dinner ’til Dusk.Starting at 14:00 (after some terrible time planning from me) the various solo riders and pairs set off to see how many laps of the 15 minute course they could do in 2 and a half hours.
After a hectic (on foot) sprint to the bikes the steady lapping began, with Simon Truelove of the Flowerpot Men back first from the first lap in the warm conditions.
As the minutes ticked past fatigue and mechanicals starting to take their toll with Dan H losing a front brake pad and Dan I continually having to adjust his saddle.
90 minutes into the riding the rain began to fall, with our jester (see the videos) kindly taking on board wiping and lap recording duties.
Maths came into play with around 20 minutes to go, with calculations being made as to whether another lap could be squeezed in, with Juliet amongst those who forced another lap from tiring legs.
As people finished a crowd grew around the timing board, cheering, rattling and clapping in the riders as they finished, with Mark taking the win with 11 solo laps and the Flowerpot Men (Simon and Ben I) finishing with the most laps for a pair (13).
Then onto the prizes – for giving it beans! Many people were in contention – Charles and Ben L for their final descent style, Stace for battling through his mechanicals, Timmy for arranging a bike swap to improve his lap times by six minutes and Pete for altering the course marking tape to befuddle all those behind him.
In the end however it was decided that the people who had given the most were Marjory (consistent, determined laps on her new bike) who received the KCNC bar caps, Piotr (solo riding and organising photos) who received the KCNC star fangled nut replacement “thingy” and Dan I (second place despite saddle problems) who received the KCNC Skewers. Thanks KCNC!

Dinner 'til dusk….what a course!!!
This is a reminder to all those who enjoy riding in circles.
This is a call to all those who enjoy frantic looping, swooping down singletrack, charging up fire roads, overtaking, being overtaken, crashing, exhaustion, carbo loading, protein shakes and eating tasteless cereal bars.
This is an opportunity for people riding solo to complete 27 laps in 180 minutes (!), or for a team of four to do a lap each and then heckle the people still torturing themselves. This is the first BCC Dinner ’til Dusk….and it’s going to be awesome!
While this isn’t a competitive event (more of a chance to pretend that you’re at a race….) we thought that having some ace prizes to win would be quite nice. So, thanks to the guys a KCNC (and MAX BIKES PR) we’ll be giving away three prizes to the riders who show the most beans (enthusiasm, commitment, determination and sportsmanship) !
