More Mendip Mud
Four up in the post bus, Chris, Kevin, Steve and I (Al) meet up in Frome and headed over to Burrington Combe. I was breaking in my new toy, so stopped often to faff (I wasn’t catching my breath, honest!) whilst the other chaps stood about getting cold and offering “helpful” advice 😉 We rode up and around to Rowberrow, where we played like little kids amongst the mud and filth, before riding back over the highest point in the Mendips, through hub deep mud, wind and a little rain. We love it! Chris flatted twice, Steve bent his seat clamp and Kevin happily rode without issue. I faffed, but thats OK ‘cos she’s lovely! Back home for a late lunch and a snooze on the sofa. Perfect!

TickerTape WS – Rnd 1

The ground was pretty wet for first round of the TickerTape Winter Series yesterday, but its winter right? so what did you expect!?!
Spoons was riding well with plenty of grip on offer, well except perhaps for the new fast section after spork which offered 15meter drifts and giggles rather than traction or control – apparently it’s at times like this that the word gripery is used, yeah that’s right; gripery!
The day started well with over 20 people signed up to ride, with a £2 donation being made by each we’re chipping away at our Freelap fundraising total of £680 (having already raised over £300 at the Triple Crown) and hope to pay it off by the end of the series.
There’s been plenty of banter going back and forth between Chris Smith and Steve Geall recently, with Steve adamant that Chris will be resigned to second so long as Steve is on the start sheet. Of course Chris has won more TickerTapes than any other rider so he’s earned his bragging rights but things change; Chris has lost out in the last two events and there’re plenty who want to take the top spot.
As with every TickerTape mini races develop as the day progresses, less than 1 second separated 1st to 3rd, same with 6th to 9th and under 2 seconds between 12th and 14th; it was all very close!
While everyone rode well it was Charles Mountford who showed more beans than anyone, faceplating off of Spork which in all seriousness is pretty flipping mental. The day ended with Charles in A&E but thankfully he only had a mild concussion, sprained wrist and a bloody knee. Amusingly though he had lost most of his short term memory which made the trip there to the hospital pretty funny. So in the end Charles was awarded the Beans trophy and Stuart Ireland the ‘King of the Hill’ T-shirt for riding his hard tail with bald tyres yet still being more ‘up for it’ than anyone else. Curtis took the win with a last minute run just before the race was halted and my van turned into a neee nawww van. The sod. He’d been riding well though and it was only a matter of time before he put down a fast run. As for Chris and Steve…well…see the results sheet, apparently Chris was running the wrong rim tape or something….If you’ve missed out on round 1 don’t worry, entries are open at every round and with the points spread so tightly it’s always worth taking part!
Thanks to everyone who helped set up and pack away and a Special thanks to Rose Bikes for providing the trophies and prizes for the series.
Next round is Sunday the 19th December on Puppets…

5ive take on Cannock
An early start from Frome for Steve, Marjory, Andrew, Pete and errrrrrr……. (Oh yes Kevin !) saw us start riding in earnest at 10.30 , following a slight hitch with one car ending up at the wrong visitor centre (who could have known there were 2 !?!?!?).
Two laps of the very “red” Monkey trail and one of the “follow the dog” ensued whilst we all concentrated on taking the smoothest lines through the berms to avoid sliding off into the trees on the slippy surface – very little mud thankfully !
Steve managed to find a previously unseen side exit from one of the boardwalks and under upside down under his bike a few feet below. A few minutes of bodging followed to re-fit his rear brake lever (common sense solutions supplied by Andrew).
We stopped for a late lunch with lashings of Ginger beer (Lentil and Bacon soup actually) and a bit of a chin wag with Marjory ……………………..some time later we thought we should do one more lap of the “Dog” as the final rollers are sooooooo nice and set out to chase daylight for another “estimated 35 minutes” that turned into an hour and saw us back at the cars with very tired legs as darkness fell.
A quick change and off to Birmingham for a very nice Balti with lashings of Lassi (sorry about the beer Kev)!

Peak Trip
Every now and then we try and do a bit of a special club road trip, where we get away for an overnighter and make the most of a weekend. Some months back we’d hit the Peak and had a great time, so with winter approaching and knowing just how much fun the Peak isn’t in winter, we thought we’d head back before the winter months set in. We’d also heard good things of Rowan Sorrell’s work near Bacup at Lee and Cragg quarries, so a plan was hatched. A day at Lee/Cragg and a day in the Peak.
We went to Leigh Quarry and rode over to Cragg Quarry too. It was raining but hey. Colin from White Nancies and Colin from Luton joined us. Steep climb to quarry. Slabs. Wet. Helicopter signs. Gravel, cloud, pushing. Cragg blast. Colin’s freehub. BMX track return. Playing in quarry. Colin on pump track. Singletrack back to cars.
We stayed at a nice B&B and had a curry. Birds old stomping ground. Nice pub, proper beer. Alex from Nancies. Curry, ace curry. More beer. Police on walk back.
We went for a ride in The Peak, from Hope. We had cake. Early start, frosty, sunshine, that road down alongside broken road. Roman Road, Hope Cross, Hagg Farm, Al bike broke. Ladybower, cafe stop. Climb, views, chats, friends. Mud. Sun. Wooping. Cafe and bike shop. Drive home.
