No big new projects, but plenty to do – bring waterproofs, food and drink.

  • Important Announcement with regard to recent BCC rule violations

It is with regret and disappointment we announce that several members of the Black Canon Collective are banned from The Allotment site and club events until they have committed their time and energy to contributing to the club.

These members broke one or both of the following rules, and so will be required to complete a number of “club hours” before they will be able to use the Allotment and participate in club events again.

Rule 16: No fires are permitted at the Allotment.

Rule 13: There is to be no construction of any kind at the Allotment, including trail construction, without clear and prior consent of the committee.

Despite being reluctant to stop anybody from riding and participating in the club, the committee has decided that there have to be consequences for these actions, firstly deliberately building and then rebuilding a feature when they were aware it had been taken apart on a Dig Day, and then endangering themselves and others by having naked flames on the Allotment, an area of forestry.

The number of “club hours” that have to be done varies from member to member, from 10 to 40 hours, based on the rule breaking they were involved in, and their conduct since.

“Club hours” will include Dig Days, setting up for Tickertapes and other events, as well as other activities when suitable. If you identify an opportunity for these members to contribute to the club, please email committee@blackcanoncollective.co.uk and we will consider it.

If you identify that a member who is banned is riding at the Allotment, or at a club event, please ask them politely if they have completed their club hours – we will have a list that will be updated to show when they have completed their hours). If not, please remind them they should not be riding at the site. If there is any further problem, please inform the committee, who will act accordingly.

This notice is applicable immediately, and therefore members listed below who were involved in these incidents will not be able to participate in tomorrow’s Tickertape. They can begin to complete their club hours by helping set up and pack away the event.

    The Members are:

    Liam Arkell
    Ollie Butler
    Luke Barber
    Nathan Collins
    Robert Darvill
    Tom Dunford
    Charlie Evans
    Dean Evans
    Finn Kelly
    Seb Jennings
    Jamie McCall
    James Moody
    James Pinnell
    Ollie Pinnell
    Curtis Saunders

  • Rollapaluza + Milk Street Beer @ Avon Valley Cyclery

Saturday 23rd June 2012, Doors open 19:40, racing starts 20:00.

  • Warminster Wobble MTB TT, this sunday!

The time trial course takes in just over 1km of exciting terrain with rugged grassy sections, steep uphill’s, tight turns and flowing downhill’s. It has a bit of everything.

The fastest time overall will receive the Frank Batchelor Memorial Trophy, hand-made by a Warminster craftsman. The Challenge is divided into five age groups with a fantastic trophy, also fabricated in Warminster, to be presented to the winner of each category.

In 2012 we have re-designed the course for younger riders ‘cos that steep uphill is just a little too tough!

The Course Record was set in 2010 by Dan Irons with a time of 2:27, but the current champion is his younger and more attractive brother!

    The Course……….

    Course key:

1: Hairpin Turn – Uphill | Technique: Low gear and keep pedalling!

2: Steep – Downhill | Technique: Take it steady and shift bodyweight backwards

3: Left turn – Sharp | Technique: Right pedal down.

4: Left turn – Sweeping, Fast! | Technique: Right pedal down.

Its all free, so get yourself down to warminster town park for some grassroots (literally) mtb tt eventing!

  • June Ride Away: Exmoor (Porlock start)

SUNDAY 10th JUNE (this coming Sunday!)

Plan is to do a loop starting in Porlock.

Route is 19miles – nothing too extreme, climbing, singletrack, quiet trails, Dunkery Beacon, near Wooton Courtney, Webbers Post, down a Combe, fast downhill, singletrack blast into Porlock. There, I’ve just ridden it for you.
Usual guidelines apply: Meet at 8am in the Cheese & Grain car park. There are no facilities or shops en route so please bring enough food and drink for about a 4 hour ride. Plenty of shops in Porlock to buy your malt loaf and ‘new’-tella, though. Please also ensure your bike is in good working order and bring spares, tools and appropriate clothing.
A quick show of hands, please, to make sure this is viable. I know it’s short notice, but Life gets in the way of arranging these things sometimes.
And we need a ride-leader to volunteer his services, otherwise it’ll be a ‘forum ride’ and not a ‘ride-away’.
  • Newport Newbies

I had been looking forward to more velodrome action since my first taster back in December. To get the authentic experience however, we travelled to Newport, as they have an Olympic sized track (They even dry the air for extra speed)!

We made the 58 mile journey from Westbury to the Newport International Sports Village and loytered in reception for the rest of the posse to arrive. Neil and Simon soon rolled up, smiling from their early morning blast around Ashton Court. The rest of the group were just crossing the bridge so we decided to see what we had let ourselves in for. The first thing we noticed is what a vast room it is. The track commands most of the space, with smaller courts inside the track where a local martial arts class was taking place.

Rich and Lee arrived not long after, so we piled into the changing room and embraced the lycra! There was all sorts of excited chatter and in next to no time everyone was in the hall queuing for bikes. A track bike is a very basic machine, so the only adjustments needed is saddle height.

Our coach for the session was Brian, who had been recommended to me by several others. He was relieved to hear we all had previous track experince and wasted no time with introductions, it was straight on to the track. It was great to be back on the boards (if a little unnatural to begin with) and i was interested in what the next few hours would entail.

We did a lot of riding in a relatively short period of time, because it is a full size track (250m), you can have a lot more riders out at one time. We completed several drills to test our spacial awareness and to prepare us for riding in larger groups, so that we were as safe and competent as possible.

Brian suggested doing a flying lap- you get a lap to set yourself up and then pedal your legs off for the following lap. This was great fun and introduced a bit of light hearted competition amongst the group. Everyone gave it their all which was brilliant to see, the results were as follows:

    1. Rich: 16.60
    2. Neil: 17.66
    3. Ryan: 17.94
    4. Ben: 18.06
    5. Simon: 18.41
    6. Mark: 18.66
    7. Chris: 18.85
    8. Rupert: 19.00
    9. Lee: 19.69
    10. Al: 19.75
    11. Kev: 19.84
    12. Juliet: 20.85
    13. Marjory: 20.91
As you can see, the times were all pretty close and i am sure if we had another opportunity we could have all bettered our times. We had a warm down spin, when the whole group were on track and it was great, although i think some were beginning to struggle after a few intense hours of riding a bike with no gears or freewheel!

Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves, to complete the day we headed to the Bay Leaf in Frome for a curry, whilst Neil and Simon completed their marathon day with a lap of Cwmcarn. I am already getting the next session booked up and can’t wait to get back in the ‘Drome.

  • Dinner 'til Dusk Cancelled

Due to the forecast heavy rain and strong wind, Dinner ’til Dusk is cancelled for reasons of safety and enjoyment.

New date to be announced shortly.

  • Too much junk in the trunk

    A Longleat-erpick.

That’s the new name for a Longleat Litter-pick XC ride. It’s what we do with binbags, rucksacks and bikes in the Longleat forest sometimes. You ride off in pairs to a designated corner of the forest with a binbag lining the largest rucksack you can find, and then each fills the other’s rucksack with loadsalitter. A simple idea which marries a social XC ride with some seriously good PR and a healthy dose of that greater-good inner glow we all crave.
We had a great turn-out of riders, but the odd number of 13 meant that someone either went solo (which doesn’t really work) or joined a pair. So that’s what happened: a threesome disappeared off towards Sheppards Woods and some daisy-chain sack-filling took place. It was a beautiful thing.
In a little over two hours we pooled our findings in Longleat’s main car park, there to meet with Longleat staff who’d take it off our hands and dispose of it. To our surprise we’d collected well over 25 binbags full of rubbish, almost filling Andrew’s van, and too much for the Longleat staff to fit in the truck they’d brought to take it away. And what a variety of detritus: a door, a car shock-absorber, an oil drum, a hoover, a cistern… not to mention the usual array of Monster cans, KFC wrappers and lucozade bottles.
Especial thanks must to Gordon, Clare and young Dylan who made a bee-line for the Crockerton area (a litter hot-spot) and collected so much rubbish they couldn’t fit it in Gordon’s MPV (Longleat staff went back to collect the overflow). Sterling work from those three.
It was also good to see such a cross-section of club members out together for the one cause. Truly inspiring.
    Nice work, fellas.
