  • XC y'all!

Sunday October 10th Club Ride away
Ok it’s 2-2.5 hour journey and although I fully accept I am a bit OCD about early starts, I think we need to leave the Cheese & Grain at 7am to get a chance for everyone to make the most of the day ( the nights are closing in ) and I’m pretty sure Glencorrwg is in a different time zone too!

The trail is graded Red overall with an optional black section and some really sweet single track, boardwalks etc

    Trail map HERE

    Distance: 15km
    Climb: 400m
    Time: 1.5 – 3 hours
    Start: Glyncorrwg Mountain Bike Centre
    Overall grade: red/difficult

This is the most technical of all the trails in Afan Forest Park and is 90% purpose built singletrack.

A 6km sheep track climb gives fantastic views of Afan Forest Park, extreme exposure on tight singletrack means ultimate thrills and long, demanding descents with rocky steps to negotiate, all leading to one outrageous trail.

If you are up for it try out the optional new Black Run, graded black/severe!

As always you will need a good quality, well maintained bike with plenty of brake pad material, a helmet and suitable clothing and spares.
Just to be a bit prescriptive about it try and bring:
At least 2 tubes, patches, power-link or similar, a multi tool & pump & spare brake pads if yours are a bit dodgy.

Warm and Waterproof clothing of every possible description ( it’s Wales !) trail food and plenty of liquids.

We may go in two or more groups depending in what people want to do and how fit/delusional they feel on the day.

  • super slow mo – a test

Taking photos or shooting footage of friends riding bikes is pretty cool.
We’re lucky to have some really enthusiastic riders who are just as excited when behind the lens as they are behind bars. You’ve seen the stills that Tom Rickhuss creates, and had a taste of the videos that lay in store from a few others. Well, here’s a little glimpse of what Dan Irons is cooking up…

  • the subtle nuances of urban recycling

Well despite the forecast the weather was fine, in fact it was a wonderful day to be at the allotment. For those who chose indoor in favour of outdoor – well, you missed out. Plenty got done and we had a good time doing. We now have a great new race line on spoons with a nice little rock garden. I say *little* because compared to those found on rockier slopes it’s not much of a feature – BUT given our loamy location you’d be encouraged to focus upon the sheer determination required to locate and assemble such a collection of rocks. Sure it all looks a little muddy right now, but one shower and every stone will shine through.
The corners before will offer some flat out drifty lushness and will develop as they get ridden over the next few months. Nothing completely new, just subtle tweaks to make it all knit together with flow.
As for the rest of the allotment; we sorted every bit of drainage de-clogging old and cutting new to keep the trails running sweet come rain or shine.
Thanks to those that came and did, hope to see some more of you next time….

  • Easy breezy ride

Ok , it’s not an epic or weekly club event but it was arranged through the club forum and is open to all…

This weeks “easy breezy” Saturday club ride was well attended by ….. Err…… Me and and Al , silly really as the weather window Al predicted came good and we had a proper sunny one !

Shame on all you folk’s with better things to do like trawling the aisles at Sainsbury’s and taking the kids to ballet etc – you really need to get your priorities sorted !

Starting from the BCC car park (closer to home than the H & G) we rode down into the darkiside/doodles area and made a safer entry to the area from the road that we can use in future, no undergrowth was harmed in the making of this entrance , in fact it was more a case of making the existing moss and twigs more comfortable. – and it’s less visible and safer to enter from the road !

We then rode around a bit trying to link all the bits of sweet singletrack together in that side of the woods – we even found a boardwalk (well sort of) to try if we can find it again on Tuesday

Down the road road, along crouching Tiger, hidden Dragon and sidewinder
etc, etc ( oh yes Al has names for all of them ) and back to the without incident or bus collisions.

Don’t forget it’s Wales next Sunday wooohooo!
