  • Council Houses and Novas

I think when you imagine going on a riding trip in Wales you think of beautiful valleys, sheep and the occasional country estate. The route to the Glyncorrwg mountain bike centre (the start of the Whyte’s Level trail) was not like this. It included busy roads, boarded up council houses and modified Novas.

It wasn’t all bad however, after exiting the town we were quickly in a wide, steep valley, and soon after that were sampling the facilities of the visitor centre, in my case two slabs of toast with baked beans that were finished by Simon – who had already eaten a fair sized packed lunch.

After everyone was fed we returned to the vehicles to sort out our bikes and dress accordingly for the gloomy day and light drizzle, with Fin generously lending three of us Marin bikes (which were superb in my formerly anti-Marin opinion).

We then set off along the river to the first climb, which was 45 minutes on rooty, rocky singletrack, broken by short sections of sweeping descent. We stopped frequently which gave everyone an opportunity to recover and an opportunity to be demoralised by Chris still smiling after every climb – he seemed to be unaffected by the effort it took us.

Despite the climbing being as fun as is possible I think we (maybe not Chris!) were more excited to reach the top and to know that we would mainly be descending from then onwards, the most memorable descent being the black route which took you over boardwalk and jumps before some steep rock chutes, where Mark became entangled in his bike after crashing on a steep 180 degree corner.

From this point we were descending most of the way to the end, with Bob always easily pulling away from me despite her claims that I would be faster. Rob was also happier on the descents – his skate shoes and baggy clothing more suitable for a long downhill that featured berms and tabletops, than the climbs he had earlier mashed up.

Finally – after Fin had jet washed the bikes clean and Andrew and I had braved the ice cold showers – we were back eating again in the visitor centre. All that remained was the drive home: Mark carrying all the bikes in his van, Fin with his new flashing light on his bonnet and Andrew trying every radio station in South Wales in our quest to sing along to Take That.

  • BCC Tuesday Night Ride

We’re pretty confident with the format now so here it is: The BCC Tuesday Night Ride.

    Tuesday 16/12/2008

Meet at The Horse & Groom (East Woodlands) for 7:00pm start (theres’ limited parking available so please share transport).

90-120 mins of riding followed by a couple of drinks at the pub.

90% XC off-road however some road does mean that a rear light is needed.

    Decent front Lights are mandatory.

The ride is open to anyone, not just BCC members, so wrap up warm, bring a fiver for the pub and we’ll see you there!

Oh and do check the website for details each week as the start point will change from time to time

(Got no lights? Join up as a full member and get 10% discount at either AVC or Live2ride!)

  • Where's Will?

Where indeed did Will get to before our ride? Well I can tell you where…… everywhere but where he should have been! You see Will managed to take a country lane tour of the villages between Frome and Warminster before ever finding his way to the Horse and Groom. By the time we’d found him he’d probably done enough riding for most people but as we’ve come to realise with Will- he’s always happy to be on a bike. He just smiled and got on with it, up at the front of the group mashing his way up those hills. Quality.

The ride was good, just over an hour and a half, with only a slight alteration planned for next time; bypassing the soul destroying quagmire that is Sheppards Woods, in favour of the faster rolling trails around shearwater.

We had no mechanicals and everyone came back in one piece. I say that but Rich from Live2ride managed to aggravate a shoulder injury meaning that when sat in the pub he moved a little like Herman Munster. Oh and his light ran out of battery with 20 mins to go (my fault as I’d lent them to him)!

Was great to see new riders coming along, with even more coming next week it looks like the BCC Tuesday night ride is here to stay!

Oh and the fire in the pub was nice….

  • Mud Mud Crash Mud Crash Mud Beer

Last night was our third weekly night ride.

It seems that the promise of seeing Chris go over the bars was enough to entice a further 6 people to attend!

We started at the Bath Arms in Crockerton, all 8 of us raring to go after waiting for my forgotten battery to arrive (courtesy of Chris Snell).

We only had a 200 yard wait before Will managed to go over the bars on the very first off-road section. Good stuff.

The route was claggy and slow going, but Will kept us entertained with short bouts of speed before suffering a mechanical, falling off or flipping into a puddle.

We finished after just over an hour and a half, wet through but pretty happy.

Great beer, lush crisps and some very muddy kit!

  • Night Rider

Last night we ran our second weekly night ride.

It was wet and very cold.

This week only 2 of us showed up, Chris Sheppard and I.

Chris managed to go over the bars twice, and I managed to come to a standstill mid way through a large axle deep puddle resulting in two wet feet and a jammed mech.

There was ice on the ground by the end of the ride and even the trees were shivering.

We rode for exactly 1.5 hrs by which time my lights ran out and my right foot ceased to feel as if it was a part of my body.

We finished at the pub by the open fire with a pint and some chips.

We’re still scoping out the best route but once we’re happy we’ll publish the details of the ride so that more can come and join us each week…

  • Fish finger sandwiches…

15 turned out for the first BCC XC ride, 11 men and 4 women. 10 of us are BCC members and 5 who are prospective members.

The day started with a quick walk around the allotment before we all headed off around Longleat.

With a broad spread of fitness and ability we could have split up into two groups, instead we decided to keep the social element and simply stop a little more frequently to allow us all to regroup. I set the pace at the front while Ian rode at the back of the pack ensuring that nobody got lost.

Other than a puncture and some shifter confusion the day was incident free with even the weather on our side!

We stopped for lunch at the Horse and Groom where the food was hot and beer was cold; so we were all happy.

After a few (chips and beers) we meandered back to the allotment via a river crossing and one or two horse poo covered climbs.

Some pushed the last climb whilst others mashed up but everyone made it back in one piece.

The day was a great success with everyone loving the ride and enjoying the company.

Special thanks to Ian who organised and ran the day, he rode the whole route (at first light) to ensure it was all ride able given the recent bad weather. That’s dedication.

look out for more BCC rides in the not so distant future…we’ve even negotiated a deal with the Horse and Groom so that we can pre order food; we will arrange for it to be ready upon our arrival and will get 1 out of every 10 meals for free (oh and they do fish finger sandwiches)!

  • XC y'all

As versatile mountain bikers you will be aware of the fun that can be had riding Cross Country.

As such on Saturday the 25th of October, the BCC will be hosting a XC ride.

The ride will be an opportunity to ride with members of the club you haven’t met yet.

The event is open to non-members too, so please invite friends and family or if a non member yourself – just come along.

Ian will be leading the ride and will plan a route that has options for all, on the trails and paths surrounding Longleat, and he assures me the pace will not be too fast.

The Ride will start at the allotment, meeting at 10:00 and will finish around 15:00. This will include a pub stop at the Horse and Groom, West Woodlands at around midday. For those of you that don’t know the the pub, it has a beer garden, welcomes families, does a range of good food and also (more importantly) good beer.

    So who is interested?

    E-mail ian.crook@blackcanoncollective.co.uk for more details.

  • Great Weekend…

Thanks to everyone for all their hard work, I’m really pleased that everyone enjoyed themselves so much – makes it all worthwhile.

Both days had a great relaxed atmosphere with banter and conversation being just as cool as actually riding. Spoons and BBMS are like new – each riding fast and maturing nicely. Rudolph got the go ahead and will be a great addition, with work already under way on its build, and the jump spot is progressing fantastically.

Wills riding effort was v impressive, as was his eagerness to do his fair share.
Bens commitment to ‘pinning it’ was a cut above, as always, his shear passion for the BCC, and good sportsmanship.
Staceys effort whilst carrying his son on his back and Darrens with his injured shoulder.
Garry with his kind generosity (gotta love sausages!) and tree hugging screams.
Tom for always taking pics that capture the day.
Chris for sorting out our freelap.
All the dirt jumpers for creating a monster.
Neil, Rob and Ian for their high standards and always giving their all – raking till their forearms are ready to pop.
And of course everyone else for getting involved.

Our new timing system was fantastic, allowed everyone to set personal goals and wind eachother up. Expect some club races in the near future…

Ben and Will were chosen as the joint winners of the prize draw due to their unrivaled passion and commitment. Ben won the coin toss but gave Will the tyres feeling that he deserved them more, a very kind gesture that captured the mood of the weekend; everyone pulling in the same direction, egging eachother on and giving their all.

Great weather, great people and great sausages!

Bring on the next club weekend…

  • Goodies!

Thanks to a cheeky smile and ‘don’t ask won’t get’ attitude I’ve leeched us some prizes for Sundays club ride day!

Yep, we’ll be giving away 1 x pair of Continental Rain King DH tyres, 2 x Shimano Saint beanies, 3 x cans of Monster Energy drink, 1 x bottle of Green oil chain lube and 4 x Team Animal Commencal posters signed for us by current world champs Gee and Rachael Atherton!!!

The first two prize spots will be given out specifically to people who turn up to both the dig day and ride day, with the rest given out completely randomly. The format will be the similar to a raffle with winners asked to choose their prize from the goody table – though how winners are chosen is yet to be confirmed…. biggest drift, most commitment, widest bars (please?!?!) or most earth moved. Who knows?

We’ll also be giving away a booby prize, something that I’m sure every BCC member would kill for; a (faux) leather bound 2009 diary with our club name printed in gold on the front cover. It comes complete with an unreadable London underground map and useful conversion table (1 acre – 4,046.9 square metres!). Who knows what will qualify you to receive this unique BCC branded self management aid but rest assured one of you will.
