  • Puppets – first time TickerTape

This months TickerTape we will be using Puppets for the first time thanks to all the hard work and tremendous effort people have put in at recent dig days (thanks)!

We’ll be using the Judy line (swoopy one as apposed to the drop line, called Punch) to lead into the new bottom section of trail, then the very bottom of the course which will be a suprise section of cleared but not raked virgin trail (which will be loamy lushness all day long).

Given that ‘battery hill’ is so steep and stepped there will be an alternative option for those who don’t fancy taking it all on at once.

As always we’ll have the freelap system up and running, but remember it’s just a bit of fun so no need to take your peak off.

So, all you need to bring is a working bike (with 2 working brakes) and a full face helmet. Oh and some beans…

  • The real McCoy

We’re really pleased to announce that Madison now provide race tape for all of our TickerTape events! Most people will have seen plenty of pictures of their DH hero’s riding courses lined with Shimano tape, and if you’re anything like Ian and I the prospect of riding a Shimano tape lined TickerTape is very exciting! importantly though this tape is reusable, and provided to the club for free, saving money on the cost of the event and minimising it’s impact too!

  • Tickertickertape

Two months is a long time, especially when it’s practically three! It feels like ages since we last rode between the tapes so it was great to see BBMS lined in red and white and the usual hustle and bustle of TickerTape.

Ben Lovell, Bob Darvill and Jack Howe took the beans awards after an awesome day. Ben clocked up almost non stop runs getting better every time. Bob put in a really great effort for his first TickerTape, riding a different bike each run but giving it his all. Jack (the scruffy looking one in the middle) only managed a couple of runs but schooled most of us with his distinct riding style as he silently pumped his way down the tree lined course.

A special mention should go to Ben Batt (triple crown champion) , who always rides as if his life depends on it, putting in some blisteringly fast times, one of which was with a blow out only 2/3 of the way into the run!!!

Southerndownhill.com sorted us out with some great prizes and even brought along a back up pit tent in case it rained! Their new race bikes were rarely given a rest as everyone had a go at testing them out , so thanks to Neil and Rob for being so generous.

After the event had finished a few of us sessioned onefourthree then ‘spork’ before calling it a day and going home.

Over 20 people made it out in the end, a great total considering that we had some notable absentees, next TickerTape should be even better thanks to the days being longer and warmer too so check out the club calendar for details!

  • TickerTape – southerndownhill.com special!

Tomorrow TickerTape will be supported by southerndownhill.com to mark the launch of their new DH race team. Rob will bring his SDH pit tent (to keep us out of the rain when eating lunch) and will be giving out some cool prizes too.

What’s more exciting though is that both Rob and Neil will be there aboard their new race bikes and will be letting people have a go!

So, hope to see you there tomorrow, timing runs from 11:00 – 15:00 (though help setting up and packing away is always appreciated).

Please do bring your membership cards and remember that you must wear a full face helmet and have a working front and rear brake fitted to your bike to take part.

    beans!

  • Southerndownhill.com – Race Team

Our good friends at southerndownhill.com have launched a DH Race team for the 2010-2011 season! With an awesome line up of riders, great equipment and a pretty funky custom kit they’ll be instantly recognisable at the races. BCC members (and TickerTape regulars) Rob Lewis and Neil Cousins are both in the team so we’re really proud and keen to see them do well this season.

For many gravity athletes the prospect of tackling the fast, rooty corners of Spoons in the wet was too much, but not for one-time Tickertape Champion Andrew Denham who rampaged to the win with a sub 33 second run that obliterated his challengers.

The run was made especially impressive by the introduction of a huge new raised rock garden (‘Boobs’) built the previous day, with the determined labour of Josh and Ben being key to it’s construction (along with the vision of Neil “One Run” Cousins).

Ben – a Sutton Veny native – also excelled against the clock with his determination and continual improvements (only challenged by Burv) winning him the coveted ‘Beans’ award (and an Eastpak wallet). Unfortunately for Josh he did not find Spoons as easy – his near slick tyres and unconventional set up hindering him in technical sections, but not from going large of every jump at every opportunity.

Several riders set times early then left, confident their times would put them on the podium, sadly for both “Waterproof” Dave and ‘Big Bird’ this wasn’t to be.

Another competitor was SouthernDownhill.com owner (and prize donator)’Straight Line’ Lewis whose disgust at being unable to challenge for the win led to him only revealing a couple of his race times.

Meanwhile while some riders were aiming for speed, others were aiming for style – Simon with his 180 degree high speed skids, Nigel with his (circa 1999) Rocket Parts gloves and Daniel who received copies of Fastlane mag for being a pinner, not to mention having his own pit crew and media team.

  • BCC Weekender

As if you didn’t already know!?!

This weekend is the BCC Weekender; a glorious mix of digging & riding (oh, and tea and cake).

We’ve got plenty of building to be getting on with and some great racing to look forward to as well.

Check out the trail development plans to see what we’re hoping to achieve, and remember; the more people who help out the faster we’ll be able to get it all done!

Hopefully we’ll see a good turn out this weekend, after all what could be better than cake fueled antics in the woods?

    Simon

Confidence is a funny thing, sometime you have it sometimes you don’t.

Too much is just as bad as too little, yet its hard to find the right balance.

Our TickerTape events give members the opportunity to gain some and test what they already have.

Simon Bartlett (pictured above on the new drop on 143) has always been fast, but over the past few months he’s become faster, and more precise, riding with the measured aggression needed to challenge that top spot.

He’s not the only one either; Chris (Sheppard) has been quietly soaking it up and it’s really beginning to show. On his only timed run Chris punctured on ‘contention corner’, blowing out his front tyre on a root, but fired up and hungry to set a time Chris pushed on, hitting a tree before pedalling like a man possessed to the finish. 48.91 seconds. Brilliant.

No prizes this month due to the small number of participants but plenty of beans:  Tom, Nige and Burv all gave it plenty and would have made the decision pretty hard.

BBMS saw a slight change to the routing (just after the log drop) adding about 1 sec to the course length but with only second gear (snapped shifter!) I was only able to manage a 37.74 closely followed by Simon with a 37.94.

I genuinely believe that there’s a sub 36 for the taking but on such a tight and short course it’d take some impressive accuracy, concentration and of course plenty of confidence.

Spoons next month; will Chris Smith be able to keep his crown or will we see Will Hardy set a new standard?

  • The Morning After The Night Before 10/05/2009

You know that feeling in the morning after a heavy night on the booze? Well, almost everybody who rode at the Ticker Tape had that feeling today (I have to thank Marjory for that, brilliant night, ta), Andrew Denham had to sit out. He had very little sleep and was still wearing the dress from the night before.
Looking around at the HUGE turnout for the timed runs I could see red eyes and tired faces. I immediately thought there were going to be some very slack runs.

The course had been re-routed slightly in-between the step-downs at the top and then back up the hill just before the rocks. This provided a high speed sideways experience all the way down and a number of line choices that could hack almost a second off run times. The rest of the track was running bone dry.

A look at our watches on our first lazy hung-over practice run showed just how quick it would be. Chris Smith and I had just over 32 seconds on the watches, the previous best from the last Ticker Tape was 32.08 by me. Rob Lewis had 30.60 on his. Game on!

It was a fairly relaxed affair all day with 40 second barriers being broken and everybody scoping lines in between runs. I have never seen so many people jumping the doubles, big shouts out to them.

We had loads more people there; Graham Cook, hungry from his Bath trails being ruined by R’tards, was shredding on his 10ft long Yeti 303. Graham, with a few others, built the step down on the track originally. New kid Daniel, only 7 years old and riding real fast. He is definitely one for the future and he has parents that have a brilliant attitude in supporting him in his riding and the millions of other sports he does too. More talent in Ed too. Consistent, fast runs and learning from every little mistake made. He didn’t jump the doubles but was beating most who did. Ed received the Beans award of a freshly baked Brownie courtesy of my lovely girlfriend, Helen.

Right then back to the times.

Chris had a new bike, it was full on DH, set up like a jump bike. He was the one to beat after beating Rob’s previous time. I then got under Rob’s time then it was just between myself and Chris.
He got under 30secs, something I wanted bad, I got it. But soon after I set up his suspension properly he started thrashing me further (why did I do that?). He ended with a 29.38, over half a second quicker than me. I thought that was it, half a second was big. On such a short track, that is riding a cm too far from the line. I plugged out one more run at the last minute, 29.46. “Close but it’s not the one” as Roy Walker would say.

Chris Smith was the recipient of the Ticker Tape sticker and I was beaten by a freerider. I have a bag of excuses but I may need them for some other time.

I wanted to say hello to everyone but those who were there know how busy it was. It was great and I can’t wait for the next one.
    Cheers!
